UNITED STATES POSTAL SERVICE BREAKS GROUND
FOR NEW POST OFFICE IN YORKVILLE, IL

(YORKVILLE, IL) -- The United States Postal Service broke ground today to begin construction of a new Post Office in Yorkville, IL.

During a ground breaking ceremony held this morning, Dennis Hastert, Speaker of the House of Representatives, John E. Potter, Postmaster General, and Arthur Prochaska, Mayor of Yorkville, spoke about how the new Post Office will make good service even better in Yorkville, Kane and Kendall Country.

“Yorkville is growing rapidly and there is tremendous need for a new facility that will make mail service more efficient, “Hastert said. “Working with local leaders the Postal Service plans to create a building that will serve the community for years to come.”

The Postal Service recognized the growing need for mail service in Yorkville, Kane and Kendall Counties “The fact is, Yorkville and the neighboring cities have been growing at a rapid pace over the past few years.” say Postmaster General John E. Potter, “And we must grow with you.”

At the ceremony Speaker Hastert, Postmaster General Potter and Mayor Prochaska were joined by Lynn Dubajic, Executive Director of the Yorkville Economic Corporation and Don Hammon, Property Ventures, North Aurora, IL The following officials from the United States Postal Service also participated in the event: Jo Ann Feindt, Vice President, Area Operations, Great Lakes Area; James M. Holmes, District Manager, Central Illinois District; Sharad C. Shrestha, Manager, Facilities Service Office; Lester M. Matanic, Manager, Post Office Operations, Central Illinois District; Irene Windett, Postmaster, Yorkville, IL and Kay Aherns, Sales and Service Associate, Yorkville Post Office.

The current Yorkville Post Office has been operating at 201 West Hydraulic Street since 1969. Since then five city and six rural mail routes have been added. In the past two years, more than 800 new deliveries have been added.

The United States Postal Service approved funding for land acquisition and construction for the project in the fall of 2004.

A 6.21 acre site located at 604 East Countryside Parkway was purchased in November 2004 for 1.75 million dollars. The estimated cost of construction is 4 million dollars. A contract for construction of the 26,000 square foot facility is scheduled to for award in February 2005.

The new facility will feature three retail sales counters, one of which will be handicapped accessible, 463 post office boxes and 20 parcel lockers. It will house mail delivery operations for Oswego, Sugar Grove and Yorkville, IL. The new facility will provide twenty parking spaces for customers, 122 parking stalls for employees, and will be fully handicapped accessible.

The project is expected to be completed in February 2006.
