First of big retailers debuts with Kohl's to open
Oct. 3 in Yorkville

YORKVILLE -- Hang on to your wallet.

A Kohl's department store is scheduled to welcome customers Oct. 3 at Route 34 and Cannonball Trail in the first of many grand openings for a new $135 million Yorkville mega-mall.

Other stores scheduled to open at the 800,000-square-foot Kendall Marketplace, the first commercial development of its kind in Kendall County, include Target, Home Depot and Linens N Things. A second mega-mall is planned next door.

Kohl's, which expects to employ about 150 people, is among the top stores residents requested in surveys distributed by the Yorkville Economic Development Commission.

Yorkville rallied in support of the store early this year, after neighbors sued the mall developer to stop construction in hopes of preserving the rural character of the area.

Almost 700 people wrote letters and e-mails urging construction of Kendall Marketplace, and supporters often specifically mentioned the Kohl's store. The suit eventually settled, with the developer agreeing to pay the two dozen plaintiffs $325,000.

Kohl's opened another store in Oswego last October.
